Competition at West High School

Preparation:

  1. Please be sure your student gets plenty of sleep/rest Friday night.
  2. Please be sure your student has a solid breakfast and lunch BEFORE calltime.
  3. Students are to arrive at calltime dressed (to be worn under uniforms): black t-shirt, athletic short, black crew socks, marching band shoes. (Please do not forget to bring/wear required band shoes. They are mandatory.)
  4. Students will need to bring a show shirt or solid black t-shirt and long jeans (dark blue or black) to be worn after the performance. Dickies band jacket or Saxon Regiment hoodie/sweatshirt is also acceptable.
  5. Students can bring a sack dinner or money to buy snacks/dinner at the competition after their performance.
  6. If a student has to leave after the performance, please let Mr. Smith know.
  7. It takes a village to ensure the day runs as smoothly as possible for everyone. Please continue reading important information…..

Donations needed:

We are in need of food donations. These food donations need to be non-sugary food items such as granola bars, yogurt, and fruit. We also need donations of Gatorade and ice.


Remember we are supplying snacks and drinks for 75+ people (students, Mr. Smith, and coaches). Snacks and drinks can be dropped off on Friday during rehearsal or at calltime on Saturday. We also accept monetary donations for these items.


Volunteers needed:


We will need help loading the truck with equipment at North, unloading at West HS, reloading at West HS, and then unloading again at North. If you can help with any or all of these, please sign-up.


We will need help moving pit equipment, drum major podiums, etc. from the staging area to the field for the performance and back after performance (same as is done for football games).

Some things to consider for new parents & students:

  • You do not need to have experience to volunteer! There will be other parents on hand to show you what needs to be done.
  • There is an entrance fee for all competitions. Per the attached West HS flyer, tomorrow’s competition is $10 for Adults and Students with ID $5. All performing students are exempt from the fee.
  • If you volunteer on competition day by loading/unloading, moving equipment, etc., it’s possible you will not have to pay the entrance fee but not guaranteed. Details will be explained on comp day.
  • Important note for unloading at North: Jerry, our truck driver, will be returning to North as soon as loading his truck is complete. If you sign-up to unload at North, we will send you a text message of his estimated time of arrival at North (approx. 7pm as of now). Unloading at North is a perfect opportunity for those who are unable to attend the competition.
  • Be sure students have all uniform requirements listed above on comp day. Judges will deduct points from the performance if students are not wearing the required shoes, socks, etc.
